Nettlebed Creamery - Virtual Cheese Awards Supreme Champion 2024!

The Virtual Cheese Awards were founded in 2020 to help support and celebrate British cheesemakers struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Awards have grown steadily in the last four years.

Many of the cheeses entered in the Virtual Cheese Awards are SALSA members, and we are delighted that this year’s Supreme Champion is Witheridge in Hay from Nettlebed Creamery, which has held SALSA plus Cheese Certification since 2017.

Witheridge in Hay is a semi-hard alpine-style cheese, the only British cheese aged in hay. The hay lends grassy notes to the rind and keeps the cheese beautifully moist. It has the strength of a mature cheddar and the sweetness of an alpine.

 The Virtual Cheese Award judges said it was a “really interesting and well-made piece of cheese, which had a dried fruit aroma with a cinnamony backnote. Lovely rich nutty element. We are totally charmed by this cheese!”

The SALSA plus Cheese Standard is designed specifically for small cheesemakers in the UK. It includes all the clauses of a standard SALSA audit, plus additional clauses written by the Specialist Cheesemakers Association – to cover all aspects of cheesemaking. There simply is no other food safety Standard written specifically for Cheese!
