Island Foods is a small, family run, traditional butchers established in 1985. Since its conception, they have gone from strength to strength providing for local pubs, restaurants and care homes. In the last 10 years, they have secured contracts for their local hospital and the majority of the council run schools thanks to acquiring SALSA certification. What motivated your company to seek SALSA in 2014?
We wanted to hold ourselves to a higher standard in food safety.

We have been able to secure contracts using the SALSA certification and been able to use it to evidence our standards.

As the only butchers in our local area with SALSA, we have found that we can market ourselves as the best option for supplying vulnerable groups and those who want to ensure that butchery practices are carried out safely and properly.
How does your team prepare for the annual SALSA audit?
We ensure that our policies and practices are up to date with the latest advice throughout the year. We also work closely with our food safety technician to see what we can improve on and keep ahead of the game.
What have been the most significant challenges in maintaining your certification since 2014?
To incorporate not only the practical side of maintaining a high standard of food safety but also to ensure that the documentation side is constantly maintained and updated.

Where we supply to both the local hospital and the local schools, our SALSA approval means we have a high standard for food safety for not just vulnerable groups, but every single customer who orders from us.
