SALSA launches new Brokers, Storage and Distribution Standard

SALSA launches new Brokers, Storage and Distribution Standard

Having successfully approved thousands of businesses against our Food and Drink Production Standard, SALSA’s widely recognised food safety certification scheme is now also open to those involved in the brokerage, storage and distribution of food products.

Still very much aimed at the UK’s smaller food and drink businesses, it is anticipated that the new Brokers, Storage and Distribution (BSD) Standard will be of particular interest to local wholesalers, fine food and speciality distributors and UK-based food brands who outsource their manufacturing.

Scheme Development Manager Bonnie Joplin explains: ‘Until now, SALSA Certification was only open to manufacturers. However, we see many small food businesses in the UK, who supply the market with great products but are not necessarily producing themselves. This new standard will bring more small and local suppliers under the SALSA umbrella, enabling SALSA to provide food safety assurance across the supply chain. This is especially important as food safety standards have never been under closer scrutiny. Now more businesses will have the opportunity to demonstrate they operate to SALSA’s recognised and widely accepted safety and legal standards.”

As members, suppliers receive a range of valuable benefits including:

  • Credentials from a widely recognised food safety certification scheme
  • SALSA Directory listing - visible to regional and national buyers
  • An affordable scheme and standard - appropriate to the size and scale of smaller businesses
  • Support in audit preparation and discounted SALSA training courses
  • A stepping stone to further food safety quality certification schemes

SALSA certification is only granted to businesses that can demonstrate they are capable of supplying safe and legal food and are committed to continually meeting the requirements of the SALSA standard.

Bonnie goes further, ‘our members can clearly evidence that they are operating to the SALSA Standard through an annual audit and approval process. If you a UK based food and drink supplier and are looking to enhance your food safety management practices and credentials, then we’d encourage you to get in touch and find out how we can support your business.’

By registering as a supplier via the SALSA website, you can access the new Brokers, Storage and Distribution standard. You may also be a producer, in which case you may want to be certified for both Standards. Use our eligibility quick guide – Which SALSA Standard?  to decide what works best for you.
